چکیده

We report on experiments on the rheology of gels formed by diffusion-limited aggregation of neutrally buoyant colloidal particles. These gels form very weak solids, with the elastic modulus, G0svd, larger than the loss modulus, G00svd, and with both G0svd and G00svd exhibiting only a very weak frequency dependence. Upon small but finite strains g , 0.45 the elastic modulus increases roughly exponentially with g2. We explain the observed strain hardening with the highly nonlinear elastic response of the rigid backbone of the gel to elongational deformation. [S0031-9007(98)08309-4]

Mechanical Properties of Colloidal Gels Subject to Particle Rearrangement

In a colloidal suspension with attractive interaction, particles form aggregates that settle to the bottom of the container. As the concentration of particles is increased, the overlapping of the aggregates (flocs) produces a continuous network throughout the suspension before settling occurs and a colloidal gel is formed. Colloidal gels may be divided into hard gels and soft gels. 1 Hard gels ...

Internal Dynamics and Elasticity of Fractal Colloidal Gels

The dynamic structure factor of fractal colloidal gels is shown to exhibit a stretched exponential decay to a finite plateau with an exponent of about 0.7. The value of the plateau depends on both initial particle volume fraction f0 and scattering wave vector. We show that this behavior results from the contribution of internal elastic modes of many length scales, and present a model which acco...

Length scale dependence of dynamical heterogeneity in a colloidal fractal gel

– We use time-resolved dynamic light scattering to investigate the slow dynamics of a colloidal gel. The final decay of the average intensity autocorrelation function is well described by g2(q, τ ) − 1 ∼ exp[−(τ/τf) ], with τf ∼ q −1 and p decreasing from 1.5 to 1 with increasing q. We show that the dynamics is not due to a continuous ballistic process, as proposed in previous works, but rather...

Homogeneous percolation versus arrested phase separation in attractively-driven nanoemulsion colloidal gels.

We elucidate mechanisms for colloidal gelation of attractive nanoemulsions depending on the volume fraction (ϕ) of the colloid. Combining detailed neutron scattering, cryo-transmission electron microscopy and rheological measurements, we demonstrate that gelation proceeds by either of two distinct pathways. For ϕ sufficiently lower than 0.23, gels exhibit homogeneous fractal microstructure, wit...

Structural change and dynamics of colloidal gels under oscillatory shear flow.

The dynamics and rheological behavior of colloidal gels under oscillatory shear flow have been studied by using the Brownian dynamics simulations. The dynamics is studied under the oscillatory shear of small, medium, and large amplitudes. In the small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) regime, the colloidal gel retains a rigid-chain network structure. The colloidal gel oscillates with small str...
